Hell Is Upon Us is definitely worth a read for anybody interested in the Pacific campaign. However, it is not just a book of statistics concerning who fired what at which enemy but a very thorough explanation and analysis of what happened. King fought very hard against this idea, volunteering his own: a drive across the entral Pacific that would eventually cut right to the heart of the Japanese empire. The American commanders always kept the carnage of Tarawa in the backs of their minds and were definitely influenced by it.

Time wise with the expansion from Normandy going to the end of Aug there isn't much. However, the majority of the Normandy June-August 1944 book is about the armoured offensive of the British, Canadians and Poles from the original beaches through the Bocage to the attempts to close the Falaise Gap. Helps with keeping unit cohesion for the divisions on the battlefield and supply and logistics for said units. The tank commander, as his view out of the turret was also blocked by the screen, helped steer the tank by using a simple detachable tiller linked to the steering mechanism while standing outside the tank on a plate welded to the back of the turret. However, the deployment of DD tanks by both the British and American armies meant that there would not be enough DD conversion kits to go round, so a British expert was flown to the USA with the design drawings and the Firestone tyre company began the manufacture of kits with the intention of sending them to England.

Some enraged soldiers opened fire on their own aircraft, a not uncommon practice in Normandy Normandy June-August 1944 book suffering from friendly fire. Hedgerow Hell Once ashore, the Allied forces found themselves enmeshed in a maze of impenetrable hedgerows called the Bocage. Personally, we feel that a picture of a British tank would have been more appropriate than the Tiger tank which adorns the front duct jacket, but we realize that nothing sells a tank book quite like the image of a Tiger tank. A column around La Chapelle was bombarded at point blank range by 2nd Armored Division artillery. This is well illustrated in the chapter on the ill-fated German Mortain counter-attack. Maybe an expansion to link the two up.
